IDS GmbH is a supplier of information technology and IT services for the monitoring and controlling of infrastructure networks.My duties included the Implementation of a topology fault localisation algorithm, which was developed in cooperation with my previous employers, in a SCADA system. In order to do so I had to teach myself Java as well as Groovy and coordinate with different departments and colleagues of the company. I created a new User Interface and learned how to process data with Java, utilising for example the math3 library for linear interpolation.Furthermore I wrote my master thesis for IDS GmbH where I was able to significantly improve the load approximation of secondary substations through independent project development and integration of a new strategy. This required the collaboration with other companies, structuring and evaluation of the energy data of tens of thousands endusers, a creative approach to obtain additional grid information (i.e. through Google Earth) and resorting to Matlab, Java and Python.

Upgrading MATLAB Toolbox to estimate load curves of unmeasured households

SWK is a local distribution system operator of electricity, water and gas networks. This internship was part of a research project where I continued the work on the algorithm previously developed while my employment as research assistant.In order to integrate the localisation algorithm into the existing software of SWK I taught myself object-oriented coding in Python including data analysis and modelling with the packages “numpy” and “pandas”.Through designing and implementing a field test within a local low-voltage grid, which required interdisciplinary collaboration with project partners, I was able to verify the functionality of the localisation method.I learned fundamentals of project management and demonstrated my quick understanding of issues and application of solution expertise.

The Faculty for Energy Systems and Energy Management achieved excellence in education for electrical power engineering and conducts major research into the challenges of structural change in energy-systems.After I independently learned Matlab and demonstrated that I am able to structure and process extensive data packages throughout several assignments, I had the opportunity to co-develop a worldwide unique localisation method for topology faults in power grids. This was a major step towards including renewable energies and for example electric cars into our power grids.Subsequently I verified the algorithm with creative conceptual design based on synthetic data and made parameter studies possible through the development of a user interface.
