I ran MOD's investment decisions system - in terms of process and case work - ensuring value for money is delivered balancing conflicting perspectives and working closely with Ministers, HMT and CO on the cases outside Departmental delegation; I initiated and ran one a major change programme (MAID) to update, streamline and re-balance our investment processes. I provided support and assurance to the 40 Defence Major Projects (the most signficant projects in Defence). Finally, I set the Department's Project Management Function strategy developing the profession.

Set up a completely new Government service in 3-delivery channels.

I spent 2013 working with a range of EU Defence Companies to bring together a complex high-value export campaign in the Gulf region. I was responsible for delivering the Offset and Marketing strands of the multi-billion pound deal.I am set up a new Analytics Centre within MOD, principally supporting the Industry, Exports and International relationship area thus creating and informing debate ahead of the 2015 SDSR.

NATO’s staff college brings together senior members of the Armed Forces and Military HQs from the alliance and its partners to collectively study the global issues and trends that could threaten stability. Forty nations took part in my course. Delegates learn to understand one another and developed policy for NATO that all nations could subscribe too. As the UK delegate, I represented the national position on diverse issues and sought to explain British logic and culture to best influence a global audience.

I led the joint propulsion team through a turbulent period defining the role of this novel team, setting the strategy and plans for the next 5-yrs. JPT focused MOD's relationship with one of our strategic suppliers, and supports MOD gas-turbine engines across the domains through the development, and implementation of long-term partnered support arrangements. When I left JPT was an organsiation of around 40 staff with an annual spend of c.£250m.

JPT was co-located with Rolls-Royce and accountable for providing safe, value-for-money engines on all the RAF’s fast jets. As DTL I was responsible for the effective day-to-day running of the team and delivering projects within it - such as negotiating the c. £1.5bn contracts to support Tornado and Typhoon engines for the next 15-years and running a project to determining how the engines in Apache and Merlin helicopters can be supported more effectively.

During my Bath MBA course I focused on Entrepreneurship and Knowledge Management. I completed consultancy projects with English Sport, BMT, Aqua Glass, Apple and Boeing. My thesis - using knowledge management to define where the boundary between MOD and Defence Industry should be - has resulted in action from some of the teams studied and a strategy re-think from the sponsoring defence consultancy.

I was responsible for designing, delivering and sustaining the c.£130m Reaper unmanned aircraft system. The 66ft wingspan planes, flown by crews thousands of miles away, provide real-time video to forces on the ground and headquarters world-wide. The system covered everything from the safety case to the satellite communications and spares supply chain. It was delivered through bespoke international agreements and contracts with General Atomics and Paradigm. My team and I put it into service early, under budget and within the required performance envelope, winning MOD and external awards.

The trans-Atlantic relationship is fundamental to the UK’s defence and security strategy. I was the principal interface for all the MOD’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Recognisance research, equipment projects, and policy makers. I provided advice, helped projects negotiate US bureaucracy and set-up collaborative programmes where UK and US goals aligned.
