The challenge: To meet market demands, investment in technology and a completely new approach to business processes would need to be formulated and implemented. Business information was spread across three separate databases, with no way to map data between the systems, resulting in a lack of meaningful information. The key to success would be understanding the financial data and systems, generating engagement and commitment from the team to improve performance, whilst keeping a tight handle on project deliverables for the software change implementation. • Lead the Real Estate Management finance team of 23 people, including coaching, mentoring, and hiring staff.• Build the budget and forecast, including building dashboards and financial models.• Optimise business processes and systems.• Execute research to assess the real estate management software offerings in the market against business requirements and present a business case to the NZ ELT and ANZ CFO. • Lead the software change project, including the co-ordination of workshops and training with all stakeholders: COO, external consultants, IT, Accountants, and REM team. Key Achievements:• Achieved stretch target staff cost ratios, through facilitating well supported and financially backed business decisions. Developed a "sandbox" model for the executive leadership team which allowed the user to run scenario analysis to determine the financial impact on the forecast and business ratios. • Created trust in the financial outputs by building a forecasting and budgeting model that is transparent, robust, and flexible. The Challenge: The chancellor of the ex-chequer announced a mandate to pool the assets of the Local Government Pension Schemes (LGPS) funds across England and Wales (total market of £200bn AUM). Given their newfound bargaining power, the LGPS pools were looking for a discount on their investment management costs. The market was also calling for more transparency, and the pricing structure needed to move from a total expense ratio to splitting costs between an annual management charge and on fund costs. To do this, the business needed to determine the cost components and what it cost to run a fund.Key Responsibilities:• Lead the plan and financial analysis of the UK Defined Benefit book of business’ fund flows, assets under management (£350bn) and revenue (£350m). • Lead the budgeting and forecasting for the UK Distribution and Oversight function (£20m), Investment Operations (£40m), Retail Operations (£20m), Information Technology (£30m), and the Global Trading team (£4m).• Collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders across the business (CFO, COO, Head of distribution, Heads of funds) to gain commercial insights and inputs for the plan and forecast.Key Achievements:• Built automated, robust, valuable, and visually pleasing reporting that could be run by junior staff members using inbuilt macros. • Control of cost base through understanding each cost centre and challenging the business on variances to budget. Earned the confidence of the business in the financials and gained their engagement on the budget and forecast process.• Built a model to price individual funds and provided revenue, pipeline, and fee analysis to the business leaders. • Fee expert and main finance contact to the UK distribution team on the local government pension scheme fee negotiations (£46bn AUM).
