About Philippe Laissue
Imaging specialist with a focus on developing methods for quantitative microscopy: My main expertise is in vivo fluorescence microscopy and quantified image analysis, using multi-scale approaches and fluorescent proteins, for biological and biomedical applications. I have worked in diverse research fields, from basic neurobiology to cellular models of human diseases. The developed methods have been published and are used by research groups around the world. I have also established my own research group, and in the last five years have been principal investigator and co-investigator on grants worth over £1M.Highly experienced teacher and instructor: I have set up, taught and examined numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses and workshops. The subjects range from microscopy and cell biology to human anatomy, physiology, embryology and medical imaging. As Director of Bioimaging at the University of Essex, I provide internal and external training, supervision and advice on bioimaging. I am now regularly invited to contribute lectures and practicals to international conferences and world-class courses.

Collaborative research is currently funded as co-investigator, enabling development of image-based methods for different biomedical and environmental systems. Management includes training staff on sample preparation, advanced image acquisition & image analysis, and establishing, maintaining and expanding a financially self-sufficient facility.

Enabled by the Laura and Arthur Colwin Endowed Summer Research Fellowship Fund, this Whitman Center Research Award has enabled me to work with resident MBL scientists on coral growth and behaviour, as well as to advance the usage of low-light microscopy for marine organisms. This is a very useful tool for many research groups, and contributes to establishing several of the marine species used at the MBL as model organisms for development, environmental research, and photobiology. There is no other place in the world that combines a passion for marine research with such an appreciation for imaging. To be able to work collaboratively in such a place has been a unique opportunity.
