Notably Philippe built LightSurf on retained earnings, without need to raise venture capital.Created, designed and developed by Philippe and his team, the first complete camera-phone in 1997, was brought to market by J-Phone in Japan in 1999 as Sha-Mail (PictureMail). The Camera-Phone was born in Santa Cruz on June 11, 1997 at the Sutter Maternity Clinic. Philippe was there with his wife, Sonia Lee. Philippe had been working on the technology components for an "instant visual communicator" cloud-based infrastructure for about a yea. After Sonia went into labor, Philippe completed the invention.
