About Philippe Miron, Phd
I am currently working as a Data Scientist and I'm the tech lead of DTN's Quantitative Precipitation Estimate software. I am also involved in various DevOps tasks related to our team AWS/Kubernetes/Gitlab Pipelines needs. Recently, I also became the lead of a frontend QA app developed with Next.js and using Mapbox APIs.[I quit Academia in January 2023. Summary of previous research topics—from what now feels like many lifetimes ago—are presenred below.]After my Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering on Experimental Fluid Dynamics, I worked two years as a Postdoctoral Associate and 3 years as a Scientist at Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science at the University of Miami (Miami, Fl), then later one year as a Research Faculty at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) of Florida Stste University (Tallahassee, Fl).My work focused on Lagrangian analysis of physical oceanography phenomena using nonlinear dynamics techniques. The main projects are related to: the inertial effects of floating material such as plastic, debris or macroalgae; the prediction of Sargassum beaching across the Caribbean and South Florida; the North Atlantic deep water pathways using Nonlinear Dynamics Techniques (NSF project); the prediction of extreme events of boundary currents (e.g. eddy shedding or change of topography) using machine learning techniques. My background is mechanical engineer specialized in Fluid Dynamics. I did my undergrad studies mostly in Montréal at Polytechnique Montréal with one year abroad at Politécnica de Madrid. After discovering the world of scientific research during a summer internship, I decided to complete a Master and a Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering, respectively in Numerical and Experimental Fluid Dynamics. My research focus on vortex dynamics, flow separation and Lagrangian post processing technique. I developed a method to track and predict the position of moving separation in vortex dominated flows based on the evaluation of strain on Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS).Specialties: lagrangian analysis, observational data sets, experimental/computational fluid dynamics, particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser doppler velocimetry (LDV), applied mathematics, finite element method, programming (C++, C, python, matlab, fortran), hacking.
Listed skills include Fluid Dynamics, Numerical Analysis, Matlab, Fortran, and 18 others.
