I study and practice coastal engineering as a research professional at UQAR and as a consultant. I have developed an expertise in coastal defence measures (CDMs) that can be decline into two axis: (i) impact assessment and (ii) design.(i) The assessment axis is defined by a structuring of scientific knowledge, which enables to integrate the geomorphological, hydrodynamic, ecosystemic and socio-economic data needed to identify the best CDM solutions. This axis contributes to base the selection of CDMs on a holistic analysis of the coastal system, and to obtaining an overall picture of the effect of CDMs on its components.(ii) The design axis is defined by the application of the technical scientific knowledge relative to each CDM, considering their development context. This axis contributes to adapting the techniques used according to the sector of intervention.Overall, my work in coastal engineering is based on a holistic analysis of the integration of a CDM in a coastal environment in order to assess, firstly, the effects of a CDM on the environment, and then the effects of the environment on the CDM.
