Phd Researcher In Theoretical Physics
The topic of my thesis is on pattern-formation and dynamics of dense colloidal systems in micro channels far from equilibrium. In accordance with experiments, I was able to capture demixing phenomena in binary suspensions and predict density profiles by extending a phenomenological theory (► See publication 2015). Previous experiments reported self-organized velocity pulses traveling upstream in the flow of a dense colloidal suspension through a microchannel. The results of my simulations unify the ideas of jamming and viscous flow, which collaboratively give rise to self-organized regular pulse trains. Furthermore, I developed a phenomenological continuum model for colloidal channel flow and analyzed it with methods from nonlinear dynamics. Thereby, I was able to explain the different flow characteristics (solitary jams, periodic pulse trains, and solitary pulses), which I observed in my simulations (► See publication 2016).The simulations were conducted with the aid of the mesoscale and particle-based solver Multi-Particle-Collision-Dynamics, which allowed me to include hydrodynamics as well as Brownian motion. The program code is written in C++ and parallelized using OpenMP. For the statistical analysis and visualization I used Python.

With the exchange program of the International Office of the TU Berlin I went abroad to Japan to write my Master thesis in the group of Takuji Ishikawa and Takami Yamaguchi in the department of Bioengineering and Robotics at the Tohoku University in Sendai. For this purpose I was granted the JASSO Scholarship of the Japanese government. During my project I developed a code in C++ to capture the swimming dynamics of a multiflagellated bacterium (E. coli) using the Boundary Integral Method. My simulation results showed the bacterium in running and tumbling state and suggested that multiflagellated bacteria show higher propulsive efficiency (distance traveled per one flagellar rotation) over a bacterium with a single thick helix. The Master thesis was graded with the highest score and the results published in Physical Review E (► See publication 2014). Furthermore, throughout my stay in Japan I attended courses in Japanese language and culture.

Visit http://www.global-engineering-teams.org/ for more information.My team was assigned the task to conduct a feasibility study on using Solar Pond technology for large scale heat processing in a Chilean mine. Solar Ponds can generate heat by storing sun induced thermal energy in the bottom of an artificial lake by imposing a salt gradient increasing towards the bottom of the lake. The salt concentration gradient results in a density gradient which prevents convection currents which would otherwise equilibrate the temperature. The thermal energy can then be used to heat the leaching stream which is beneficial at higher temperature.My task within the team was to model and simulate the processes within the lake by addressing thermal and salt diffusion using a Finite Difference solver written by me in Matlab. Hereby, the simulations were fed with sun radiation data of the region recorded over the past decade. The program was accredited in my Master program and the results published in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy (► See publication 2012).
