Researcher and artistMy research seeks to further and transform understanding of our attitudes to nature. By understanding how narratives and cultural traditions regarding 'nature' are build up over time, a dialogue can be produced which will promote pro-environmental behaviour and help change the destructive use of our shared planet. The notion of technology as an essential part of humankind and culture is of particular interest in this research, as its use has had far reaching implications for our 'separation' from nature and is of increasing consequence for future engagement. As an artist using stone for its resistance, durability and relationship to culture, landscape and body, I am researching how a material based art practice, though an engagement with philosophy can renegotiate a prevalent dialectic of nature-as-self or nature-as-object.” I began my career with engineering in the mid 1980’s and soon discovered I had a love of form and materials. In 1995 I gained a degree in sculpture before working as a boat builder, interior design project manager and Crown Courts administrator. I began my studio practice in 2001 teaching stone-carving to students at Glasshouse College and since gained a Masters of Arts distinction at Birmingham City University where I have taught on the undergraduate program and began a practice led PhD in 2008.
