About Philip Powell

A Masters degree in Politics and International Relations; with solid advocacy experience at the United Nations, EU and UK Parliament, along with a wide network base in the UK and international NGO sector.I was born and raised in India and moved to the UK in 1998. I have also lived and worked in The Netherlands and South Africa. I have traveled the globe to over 30 countries, visiting every continent for the purposes of lecturing on global issues pertaining to justice and development work. For three years I was the Chief Representative for a large global NGO at the United Nations, leading several delegate missions and lobbying on human rights issues. I’ve also done lobbying work at the EU and UK Parliament. I’ve also led training programs on theology, social ethics and intercultural studies for hundreds of participants worldwide. I have written research and policy papers on global justice issues. I am passionate about human rights and the struggle to achieve a more just and peaceful international order that will benefit the poor.     CIJR is the advocacy and public policy branch of Youth With A Mission – England. YWAM England holds special consultative with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. CIJR serves as the bridge for facilitating grassroots development practitioners in YWAM to engage policy experts and decision-makers at the United Nations for purpose of advancing the human rights and justice for all. My role in CIJR involved the following: Engaging in advocacy on global justice issues (MDGs, HIV/AIDS, Anti-trafficking); lobbying bureaucrats at the United Nations on specific human rights issues; undertaking detailed policy research, engaging in strategic communication, networking with other NGOs (Eg: Tearfund, CARE, Stop the trafik) to form strategic advocacy coalitions; and leadership development of staff and management of CIJR’s international work. During my time as head of advocacy, I researched and successfully completed the submission of YWAM England’s United Nations Quadrennial Review in 2007. CIJR was also part of a advocacy campaign to end the practice of infanticide in Brazil, which resulted in legislation passed in the Brazilian Congress outlawing the practice. CIJR also hosted a major event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
