Philip specialises in advising clients on strategic patent issues, including patent portfolio development, patent licensing and litigation.In the field of patent acquisition, Philip’s work involves helping clients develop policies to capture and protect the results of large-scale development programs, advising on patentability of software and firmware inventions, and drafting patent applications in complex technical areas. He has worked with clients to manage portfolios ranging from a handful of patents up to some of the world’s largest.Philip has 20 years’ experience in advising European-based clients on defending and resolving patent litigation actions, particularly in the US. He has been responsible for establishing invalidity of numerous patents involved in actual or threatened litigation, managing invalidation actions such as reexaminations, oppositions and post-grant reviews, advising on the handling of International Trade Commission investigations, and negotiating favourable licensing settlements. He has successfully represented clients in over 50 opposition and appeal hearings at the European Patent Office.During a period working in house at one of the world’s largest telecoms companies, he worked on negotiating global cross-licensing deals and standards-based licensing structures for essential patents.Philip’s technical specialisations include electronics, automotive, software, telecoms and materials.
