My wife had been a stay-at-home parent during the majority of my military career and was thriving in her new career. Having some free time available, I was able to take advantage of a variety of opportunities to give back to my community. I assumed a volunteer role as Treasurer of our school district's band parents organization. In this role, I helped the organization raise nearly $30,000 in revenue that directly impacts each school's activities and educational efforts. I recommended and instituted a more effective communication process that helps the volunteer corps contribute to the planning process and stay informed of important details. I obtained a substitute teaching license and taught various classes at the local high school and middle school. I also had the opportunity to serve in several roles at our church to include interim worship leader during our search for a permanent hire, four weeks as financial secretary while the incumbent recovered from knee surgery, four weeks as media specialist while the incumbent took a 30-day wellness sabbatical following a successful battle with cancer, and as a consultant to our church's latchkey childcare program to plan and implement the transition from largely manual financial and accountability processes to an industry leading software package. These positions not only provided me the opportunity to offer assistance during a time of need within various organizations and sharpen skills that aren't exercised in larger organizations, but did so while accommodating my need for flexibility when a family situation required it.
