About Philip J.

Nature inspires us because it’s sublime. It puts self into perspective. We are part of something much bigger than ourselves. But today nature is vanishing. Rapidly. Drawing on many productive years professionally advocating for the environment, I now photograph significant natural landscapes at risk from climate change and those which are truly sublime, like Iceland's lava landscape. Over the years I have collaborated with leaders like former mayors David Miller (Toronto) and Ken Livingstone (London) to facilitate adoption of municipal solutions to slow global warming. With a substantial background in environmental change, my past experience now informs my photographic projects. My current work photographing Iceland's coasts and lava field was recently exhibited at the Bob Carnie Gallery in Toronto in May, 2024. I also am also active on the board of Toronto Field Naturalists, a 100-year old volunteer NGO that promotes protection of Toronto's nature, and chair of their Lecture Committee.

As a Board member of this 100-year old volunteer NGO dedicated to conserving Toronto's nature, I organize talks that enable our members and the public to better appreciate Toronto's natural areas, especially its ravines. As chair of the Lecture Committee, I am looking forward to upcoming panels in 2025 that I am organizing on the health benefits of nature and case studies of what the Japanese call "Shinrin-yoku" or forest bathing, casual but structured walks in forests that lower blood pressure and calm anxieties.

I am an active photographer documenting natural landscapes and their communities that may vanish as the planet warms. These include the Arctic, Pacific atolls, barrier islands, and coastal and inland freshwater marshes. A major solo exhibit at the Cardinal Gallery in Toronto in 2020 featured a survey of Canada's fragile wetlands. Since 2022 I have been photographing Iceland's coasts and lava fields, sublime landscapes that offer compelling opportunities for creative compositions. This recent work was recently shown in TERRAIN, a solo exhibit at The Bob Carnie Gallery in May 2024. In 2018, my work was shown in a major international exhibit, INTO THE WOODS: TREES IN PHOTOGRAPHY, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
  • Jessup And Associates
    President
    Jessup And Associates 2011 - May 2021
    Toronto, Canada Area
I have engaged with volunteer projects with NGOs which were a good match for my experience and knowledge of green technologies such as LED lighting and home energy efficiency. Provided consulting services to an Ontario municipality to advance an innovative P3 financing solution for a large LED street lighting retrofit and smart city network. Was also subcontracted by another firm to research and write a "thought paper" and international case studies to advance development of a Canadian network of municipal low carbon innovation initiatives, led by Toronto's The Atmospheric Fund (TAF). I have also consulted for the World Bank Institute and CLASP (Washington DC) to research, analyze and write case studies of municipal LED street lighting solutions. I am now retired from my consulting work.

    Advisor
Dunsky Energy Consulting Feb 2017 - Oct 2017
I provided research and analysis as a sub-contracted consultant to Dunsky Energy assessing the feasibility of creating urban low carbon innovation centres across Canada, drawing on the experience and accomplishments of The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) as well other local carbon innovation models worldwide. In addition to authoring the thought starter paper for the project, I researched low carbon innovation case studies, helping develop an action plan based on findings, and contributing to the final report and presentations.

  • Clasp
    Lead Researcher
    Clasp Mar 2015 - Dec 2015
    Washington D.C.
I was contracted by CLASP to provide LED street lighting case studies to the World Bank's Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP). Governments in developing countries face challenges on how to design finance, and implement major LED street lighting, as well as adaptive control scale-ups. Only 20% of developing country cities have credit ratings, so innovative financing models are needed to speed adoption. This project will produce new guidance on implementation modalities and financing structures that are actually working.
