About Phil Knock
I'm Phil Knock. I’m a senior software engineer at Sonos inc. with nearly 10 years of professional experience shipping embedded audio products. I'm passionate about pursuing the intersection between sound and technology. At Sonos, I work on the audio processing team, where we're responsible for the signal processing running internal to the speaker. Here, I've contributed to various NPI programs including the Era 100, Era 300, Arc Ultra, and Sub 4.My audio DSP experience includes the realtime implementation of virtual models of analog circuits, time/frequency domain processing, convolution/deconvolution, FIR/IIR filtering, dynamic range compression, harmonic distortion, chorusing/flanging, and artificial reverberation. I’ve implemented these concepts in audio effect and virtual instrument plugins on various desktop platforms including JUCE, Matlab, Kontakt, and Max/MSP, as well as on embedded platforms such as embedded Linux, ARM, with some exposure to SHARC platforms in addition. My prior experience includes being a DSP engineer at Fender Musical Instruments inc., where I implemented a wide variety of virtual analog models of tube amplifiers and guitar effects pedals for embedded platforms. Previously, I was a software engineer at PreSonus Audio Electronics, where I contributed to a variety of successful embedded pro audio product releases, such as the StudioLive series of mixing consoles. I also contributed multiple DSP models of guitar effects pedals to the virtual amp modeling suite Ampire.Prior to that, I worked on two Kontakt plugin development projects. One for for SoundYeti called CollisionFx, and the other for RemixHits. Previously, I worked as a student researcher at Belmont University for professor Eric Tarr. This consisted of developing audio plug-ins to demonstrate fundamental audio engineering and DSP concepts. Today, these are utilized in various classes throughout Belmont's Audio Engineering department. This work also included the creation of a 4+ hour tutorial series on developing a basic audio plugin with JUCE. This work can be found at www.hackaudio.comI also got the chance to work at Belmont's 34 Music Square East and R.E.M Studios as a recording studio staff engineer. There I worked to ensure the proper functionality of studio equipment, helped to educate students on proper use of the gear, and assisted on professional recording sessions. Here, I became proficient with Neve VR, SSL, API, and Toft recording consoles, as well as the operation of patch bays, various outboard processors, and microphones.
Listed skills include Studio Recording, Public Speaking, Ios Development, Recording Studio Staff, and 23 others.

I had the opportunity to engineer for Belmont's Studio Singer's class (School of Commercial Voice), which has been an absolute joy. Students write their own arrangements of well-known songs and bring them to class where they work with their peers to create a full ~10 piece acapella that I record and mix using Belmont's facilities and immaculate gear. Through this experience I have refined my ability to troubleshoot audio equipment when time is of the essence, and I've learned how to delegate responsibilities to my assistant engineer in order to make the process as smooth as possible for the professor and the students.
Ios Development Intern
This was an incredibly fruitful learning experience. Not only did I learn much about iOS development, but I have also learned much about what it means to be a software developer in the process. My first iOS development experience, one of my best friends named Bence Budavari and I dove right into creating a version 2 of an existing app. The app is called Lyricord, whose premise is whose premise is for a user to download from a selection of backing-tracks, write time-synced lyrics, record audio/video with their device, and publish the mixed product to the app. Responsibilities included interface design, working with Core Audio, server management (Parse), and Push Notifications. Incredibly rewarding to set my own development goals and work to make them a reality.
