Phill D Slater. Traditional Illustrator Being located in Macclesfield, Cheshire, I take huge inspiration from its cobbled streets, quirky odd-looking homes and secret architectural gems, not forgetting the wonderful countryside that is all here on my doorstep. With its ever-changing landscapes you can’t help but be inspired and it’s clear to see this mirrored in my work.I’d like to think of myself as a traditional Illustrator, only because I use a pencil and draw on paper (which is relatively unheard of these days) My obsession with drawing started from an early age when my brothers and I used to spend hours after school watching cartoons, reading fictional books which piqued my imagination and enthused me to draw. I was often being told off for sketching in school exercise books, napkins or any scrap of paper I could find including house bills and important wedding invites. I was fascinated with drawing and creating imaginary worlds and so following high school I pursued a degree in Animation. The opportunity to bring a character to life with multiple images blew my mind and it still does today.Animation is my hobby, but I excel in drawing. I describe my drawings as ‘freewheeling’ images that looks as though it is done on the spur of the moment. However even a single drawing requires a certain amount of preparation and planning, where the scene and character development, research and design elements come into play. I enjoy researching and getting to know my subject as it helps spark my imagination and bring my drawings to life to give them a real personal quality.
