My wife and I started Whispering Oaks Ranch for Rescue Horses, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, to care for unwanted older horses. We provide a safe home, dignified life and quality care for our senior horse residents. My previous professional experience focused on facilitating rural community change across the southern United States by integrating strategic community planning, educational innovation and economic opportunity. This grass roots process involves large numbers of community residents in developing ten year strategic community plans of reinvention. The results can be transformational.I have also led national and international philanthropic efforts as a past National Board Chair of United Way of America where I established policy for United Way’s income, education and health mission priorities (“Live United”) and am a founding board member of United Way Worldwide, serving on this board for 12 years as United Way extended its reach into 47 countries across the world. I believe when people come together and develop a common vision communities are strengthened and lives are changed.
