I’m an aspiring Software Engineer who is interested in Backend development. I studied Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UCI and later studied Computer Science at USC. My favorite topics / classes in my Computer Science study were Multimedia Systems, Operating Systems, Databases, and Networking. What I found most interesting about Databases is the relation between the access patterns performance (the manner records are retrieved - Sequentially, randomly, in bulk, with high write throughput or update throughput) in relation to schema, indexing, and database internals. I have experience for assignments and personal projects using Databases such as Postgres, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Cassandra, DynamoDB, and Redis for different purposes such as retrieval by key, relational querying, geospatial querying, caching, and text indexing. In terms of backend and Data Engineering tooling I’ve used software like Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, gRPC, Nginx, Apache Web Server, and have familiarity writing backends with Express/Typescript, Go, in Spring Boot. I have used different protocols for web apps in the past including REST and GraphQL APIs, WebRTC / SFU, and Websockets. I have lighter experience with Frontend and Mobile Development where I’ve done minimal work with React, Flutter, and Webpack. As far as Dev-Ops,I also have experienced setting up Kubernetes Cluster on a set of Vagrant-allocated Virtual Machines on Virtual-Box, and learned to debug and analyze clusters and passed both the CKA and CKAD. I also have experience using tools like logging (Filebeat, Elasticsearch), Metrics Monitoring (Prometheus Exporters, Prometheus Agents, Grafana), and Keycloak.I have also have some interest in Linux Sys-Admin work, and familiar with Linux Systems with things like Networking Devices, IPTables, Networking Config, Linux Security (OpenSSL and CA standards - OCSP, CRL, v3 Extensions), PAM, NSS, SSSD, Booting, and setting up DNS, LDAP, and some Kerberized Services on-premises.The aspects of networking related to the use of BGP, Content Delivery Networks, Reverse Proxies and Caching to control exposure of internet services interest me. The most awe-inspiring papers we read was a paper about Akamai’s DNS global routing and advertisement, a paper from Bing about Anycast vs eDNS performance of CDNs, and a paper about current progress of BGP-Security. I’ve used Quagga and GNS3 with Cisco Routers to practice minimal BGP configuration on routers. Learning about BGP helped me better understand what a network address truly is and how services are actually exposed to clients.
