My current role is in a highly regulated industry and my employer has over 7 decades of history. Highlights include:Data Retention and Information Recovery:I’ve worked with the Digital Preservation Coalition to understand how best we can retain data in active and inactive forms for decades. I have worked on decommissioning and retaining from legacy systems. For unstructured content, I have experience prototyping an Apache Solr search index to look for near duplicates using text profile hashing, as well as proximity searches with an eye to help us confirm document classifications. GDPR:I worked with our Data Protection team to model their Impact Assessments in Orbus iServer in a way where we could create our RoPA report as a view. Graph Modelling:I was a finalist in a "Dragon’s Den" style competition run by my employer. I used Neo4j to model physical isolations in example physical networks. Both to keep the worker safe and to demonstrate alternative routes to feed plant if a set of nodes were isolated. I have also worked with a customer to use PageRank and Eigen data science techniques to show the biggest influence on our condition reports.Governance:I am a standing member of the Enterprise Data Governance Board. I was the author of our integration strategy and have responsibility for sections in our Technology and Data Principles and Standards. I also authored our Data Quality Policy based on ISO8000-8. BIM and OT:I work closely with my Engineering and Operational Technology colleagues. This includes IT oversight of their RDL (Reference Data Library) work and modelling telemetry from Data Historians and Smart Instruments. I have investigated IFC as a neutral interchange format that includes geometry and demonstrated quantity take off from an ifcXML file using XQuery. I have recommended standards around our point cloud surveys.
  • Scotmid Ltd
    Is Manager
    Scotmid Ltd Aug 2014 - Jul 2015
    Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Team and Stakeholder Management:I managed a great team of Business Intelligence and SharePoint developers. Retail is very competitive, so we needed to make sure that we provided the right insights for decision making through our BI experience. SharePoint was used by the stores for their day-to-day management and fronted embedded analytics to give a view of performance. We worked closely with the stakeholders across the different Scotmid businesses to assign developer priorities. Strategy:I commenced the Business Intelligence strategy. We provided the horizon scanning and art of the possible from the IT side, with my business colleagues supplying their needs and thoughts on the future state of retail.
  • Lombard
    Oracle Database Developer
    Lombard Jul 2009 - Jul 2014
    Edinburgh
I joined Lombard shortly after the financial crash. Lombard is the asset finance part of RBS but only just managed to be retained as a core business. True Value Incentive Scheme:There was a need to move from an income-based incentive scheme to one which took account of risk and other potential factors. The True Value incentive scheme considers international rules, such as Basel II, to work out cash flows and the associated probabilities of going to term, early settling, and going bad. I implemented the calculation engine which was performant for the sales team to adjust in real time and for batches at month end. Rules Based Exception Reporting: To assist the helpdesk, I implemented a rules-based exception report to auto-answer common queries. Invoice Financing Pricing Tool: I developed the database objects and procedures needed to implement the pricing tool for RBS Invoice Financing.
  • Ardentia
    Senior Consultant
    Ardentia May 2004 - Jun 2009
Ardentia are specialists in providing Business Intelligence solutions to the Health Sector. National Programme for IT:I specialised in the Data Quality Reporting and eDQRS (electronic Data Quality Reporting Service) which used VODIM (Valid, Other, Default, Invalid, Missing) scores.Ardentia were one of several sub-contractors to the National Programme. As such collaboration was very important in being able to deliver. Trusts:I worked with several NHS Trusts to bring a Mental Health capability to our Healthware product. My work to create the ETL from RiO (a leading Patient Administration System) was brought back to our central development team and used as the basis for a standard adapter. I built cubes and corresponding reports for CPA (Care Plan Approach), Bed Occupancy and 28 Day Emergency Readmissions. I worked with the customer to commission their submissions to the NHS SPINE from their Healthware instance.Master Data Management: I specified the Patient Index master data management solution to give a 360 view of a patient. This used fuzzy matching across demographic fields to give a confidence level that Local Patient Identifiers across legacy systems were really the same person. Trailer Tracking:I worked with a major UK haulier to provide insight into their fleet usage – tip times, utilisation, etc – through queries on their live tracking database.
  • Eds Group
    Information Analyst (Inland Revenue Division)
    Eds Group Nov 2002 - May 2004
I supported the compliance data warehouses used by the Inland Revenue for Self-Assessment Tax. Live service issues were prioritised with the customer through formal Problem Review Forums.
  • Whitelight Technology
    Consultant
    Whitelight Technology Feb 2001 - Aug 2001
Whitelight Technology is a business intelligence consultancy. I joined to work on the early dimensional designs for the Deutsche Post project and to support our sales team when they demoed Proteus, our advanced ETL tool. A great place to work but the bankruptcy of a major customer meant I was caught in a round of redundancy.
  • Logica
Systems Engineer (Energy And Utilities Division)
    Logica Jul 2000 - Feb 2001
This was supporting the Scottish Power and Scottish and South Electricity billing systems.
  • Eds Group
    Systems Engineer (Inland Revenue Division)
    Eds Group Sep 1996 - Jun 2000
This included working across the full development lifecycle for systems relating to Tax Self-Assessment. Development methods were very process oriented and I was trained as an ISO9001 Internal Quality Auditor. I worked with our supply chain to make sure that the enterprise Business Intelligence Platform (Information Advantage) could be made year 2000 compliant. To achieve this, a significant amount of customisation needed to be migrated.
