Profile bio

About Phillip J. Eby

What interests me is where information systems and human behavior overlap, not only for personal or organizational change, but also for creating collaborative ecosystems where each new participant magnifies the worth of the platform for every other participant.I've been creating behavior change through information systems before "gamification" was a word. Doing API design and library development for teams. And I wrote the code for certain Python language features that have been widely copied into other languages, including modern Javascript and PHP.Looking for interesting projects I can sink my teeth into.

- Reworked a client’s legacy REST API to scale it up to thousands of write transactions/second (equivalent to ~1% of Google search hit rate) on a single machine (web server+app+db), using a novel queueing and lease/locking mechanism coordinated via a NoSQL cache- API integrations work, such as VOIP (FreeSwitch), USPS (via Endicia), Stripe, Chatra, Quickbooks, Mautic, and many others- Backend Development: Node.js, TypeScript, PHP, along with administrative automation in shell and other languages, and limited frontend website integration or Obsidian.md plugins for e.g. email integration- Cut server costs by a factor of 3 using virtualization and containerization for legacy systems and new deployments- Developed literate devops and 12-factor tools to ensure enduring institutional knowledge, accessible at the point of use (see github.com/bashup for some of them, such as mdsh, jqmd, fik, gitea-cli, and doco)- Implemented accepted improvements and bug fixes for a wide variety of open source projects in a variety of languages (including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, C, Bash, Docker, PHP, etc.), getting up to speed on their code bases, implementing tests, adapting to their coding styles, and collaborating with their teams to improve performance, fix bugs, add new features and tests.- Reduced offsite backup costs by a factor of 5, by investigating and proposing alternative tools and services.- Part-time volunteer mentorship and code review for developers of Obsidian plugins.

Engineering Lead (Systems Integration)

After Midnight Inc.

- Slashed processing time for incoming shipments from days to hours, by streamlining the process to avoid redundant item handling and data entry, creating a scan-and-print application so that the job could be done by multiple people in parallel, while also being able to more easily be interrupted without introducing errors.(The previous process required data entry of an entire shipment before printing all the labels in bulk, then matching them to items. Replacing this with scanners and dedicated label printers and the app I created to update the existing COTS inventory system database and instant-print individual labels sped things up tremendously. I proposed the process change (and developed the app) in response to management and staff complaints about the existing process.)- Streamline purchasing by creating user scripts for purchasing dept. to work around vendor website issues and making it easier to grab product IDs and pictures for the online catalog- Streamlined PCI compliance verification and reporting by eliminating unused systems and changing the network architecture.

Consulting Developer & Software Architect

Open Source Applications Foundation

San Francisco Bay Area

During my work here I developed successful open source libraries such as the now-ubiquitous "setuptools" framework for distributing and installing Python library dependencies, and various niche libraries such as the Trellis event-driven framework. Also, developed strategy+refactoring to massively improve app startup time.

Engineering Team Lead (Internal Solutions)

Boca Raton, Fl

Manager of multiple devs, sysadmins, and business analysts to provide internal support and hardware inventory applications, among others. My personal responsibilities included analysis, design, db schemas, devops, and development of APIs/libraries used by the team. (While here, I also conceived and led the creation of Python's WSGI protocol for connecting applications to web servers, as the primary author of PEP 333.)A key project was IDS: a tool for private-label tech support and interdepartmental collaboration to resolve customer issues, with a unique queuing design of my invention to ensure rapid response, and a tenanting system to allow the same support staff to work under different private-label brands, for webhosting sold by different telcos and provided by Verio.IDS was my vision/design and my team's execution: I proposed it to the owners of Hiway Technologies (before it was acquired by Verio), to replace the expensive COTS tool Clarify, which had absolutely horrific email support and no way to do private labeling. Over the years, various competing groups attempted to replace IDS with multi-million dollar enterprise software such as Vantive, mostly without success because they could not match IDS's features and functionality, especially in the areas of shared-staff private-label and email conversation handling.IDS remained in use for several years after my departure from the company.

Director Of Development And Training

Real-E-Data, Inc.

Grand Prairie, Tx

At this tiny startup, I wore dual hats as software architect/technical lead, and onsite trainer/management consultant for our clients. Real-E-Data produced brokerage management and sales desk software for small-to-medium size real estate brokerage firms. We promoted and taught information-based management, including what nowadays would be called using "information radiators".
