RA Phillip K. Schulz, LL.M. is a legal professional with more than 20 years’ experience primarily in the financial services industry. He recently transitioned to TÜV Rheinland in Cologne, Germany, where he acts as International Compliance Manager tasked with coordinating and administering the company's global compliance management system. He also is part of an interdisciplinary committee tasked with creating a comprehensive risk management system as its legal advisor. In his previous position, Phillip acted as the Head of Guidance – Principles, Products & Legal at HDI Global SE in Hannover, Germany, where he was responsible for legal, compliance and tax matters spanning all lines of business. His main projects have included strategy and process development in sanctions & embargos (UN, US, EU & UK), a corporate Brexit action plan, advice on international insurance programs including non-admitted insurance & insurance premium tax, coordination of a silent cyber strategy as well as managing regulatory matters in the UK and in the USA. He and his team provided legal support in the development of HDI Global SE’s corporate policy respecting the Ukraine crisis. Phillip has an international background. He is a US and German citizen born in Nashville, Tennessee. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in political science from Vanderbilt University in Nashville and studying law at DePaul University in Chicago, he moved to Germany where he completed his first and second state examinations in law. He also completed an LL.M. degree at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Professionally, Phillip always has maintained a strong focus on international law and maintained responsibility for business in the USA, the EU and in Latin American markets. In addition to English, Phillip also speaks German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. Over the course of his career, Phillip has established expertise especially as a member of the Emerging Risks Committee at Hannover Re and as a risk manager both at HDI Global and at TÜV Rheinland. His primary focus is on regulatory & legal risks arising out of the USA, the EU and Latin America but including topics such as ESG, pharmaceutical claims, sanctions with extraterritorial application and advice on international disputes (litigation & arbitration). He has published legal articles and spoken at numerous conferences in his area of expertise.
