I am Professor of Private Law at the University of York. I teach and research tort, contract, and commercial law. I am particularly interested in tort law and AI, and tort law and the voluntary sector. I have held appointments, or visiting appointments at Cambridge, Oxford, Southampton, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Hong Kong, and Georgetown. My academic work has been used in argument before the UK Supreme Court, and has been cited with approval by the High Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of Ireland, the Court of Appeal of England and Wales, the High Court in Malaysia, and also by government bodies and reports in the UK, Switzerland, and Australia (amongst others). My work has also featured in the UK national press, including The Times, The Daily Express, The Guardian, and The Daily Mirror. I am currently working on a number of funded AI projects including projects funded by UKRI, the ERC, and the MPS. I regularly collaborate across disciplines and with industrial partners. I have also led a team of 35 academics on the White Rose AI Law and Ethics network. I am always happy to discuss collaboration opportunities with academics, practitioners, government, NGOs, and industry. I am also a Barrister, and have worked in a range of fields including: shipping, international trade, commercial law, arbitration, insurance, and construction. I was formerly Judicial Assistant to Lord Judge, The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, and also to Lord Carnwath, Justice of the Supreme Court.I am an experienced PhD supervisor, and am happy to consider projects within my areas of expertise. I also have significant experience of external examining (at UG, PGT, and PGR levels), and experience of external advising. I am also a law report and law journal editor.I also sit as a part time ("fee-paid") judge.
