I was fortunate enough to return to Samet Corporation again this summer and be placed on the same site as last summer (The Links Rea Farms). This summer was an entirely different experience from last summer. On my return to the project site I found multiple buildings had already been erected, and my duties were to assist the Project Engineer in the punch list process. Since I had never been around a punch list before I quickly picked up on what it meant, and how to manage it effectively. There were mishaps, mistakes, and success and I was able to learn from each of these circumstances. I learned that the back half of a project is where the most tedious labor takes place on a job. As my project executive said best “the last 10% of the project is what leaves a taste from your company in the owner’s mouth.” By participating in the owner walks, I found out he was right quickly. With the responsibility of punch listing came the role of coordinating and supervising subcontractors, and lastly, safety inspection walks. I had some experience previously with this kind of work but my knowledge this time around grew ten-fold.

This past summer I worked with Samet Corporation as an intern in Charlotte, NC. I was placed on to The Links at Rea Farms, a $55 million dollar project, where I was given the opportunity to learn and be a part of a construction team. My on-site activities included being responsible for the coordination of waste on the job-site, tracking all shipments of material onto the site, communicating with foremen and higher management, and over viewing the mock-up build on site. I was placed on an encouraging, helpful team that always answered the questions I had about processes and how to manage a site. It was an incredible experience for me as a student, and especially interesting considering I begin my official course load for Construction Science and Management next semester. I’m sure the skills and knowledge I gained on-site will be able to transfer into the classroom.
