As a Regional Planner in the Transportation & Programming division for one of the fastest growing counties in California, I worked with local, state and federal partners to plan, finance and deliver transportation projects to the region.My primary duties included providing analysis of public participation efforts utilized during the development of San Joaquin County’s most recent Regional Transportation Plan; monitoring the operations and developments of the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission, the Joint Powers Authority, and the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) rail service; advancing the discussion of further including public health considerations into the planning process; and working with local public agencies and community groups to create dialogue and better include them in our plan development process.

For this paid internship position, my primary responsibility was dedicated to research, development and creation of a healthy community plan for the town of Oceano, California. This planning document defined the relationship between Oceano's built environment and its corresponding impact on the community's health. The final document provides a series of goals, policies and action programs that sets a course of action towards a healthier Oceano community. In addition to this project, I assisted the County Planning Commission and County Board of Supervisors in providing health-based comments and recommendations for proposed land use development projects and policy documents in the unincorporated areas of SLO County.

Responsible for reviewing FEMA-approved Local Hazard Mitigation Plans (LHMP) for cities, counties and special districts in California to determine overall levels of quality and compliance in relation to FEMA guidelines. As part of this process, I assisted in helping build, document and maintain a database of approved LHMPs, documenting the noted hazards and mitigation strategies of each respective jurisdiction. These efforts contributed in delivering the 2013 State Hazard Mitigation Plan.
