Being a generalist nurse practitioner in the departments of anesthesiology, palliative medicine and hospice at a community hospital, I have a robust translational research based clinical tool box.In preparing people to do well during and after surgery, I use the results of tools like advanced cardiac imaging as well as the classic primary care skills of taking a history and doing physical exams and using laboratory studies. In my work with patients on our hospice and palliative medicine services, the goal is to reduce suffering by treating their diseases and symptoms with a more specialized skill set and with education about their disease and with counseling to reduce the impact of their symptoms on them and their families. In addition to my clinical work, I provide education on palliative and end of life care, both in house and to a range of outside professional and community organizations. Most recently, I was invited to present a talk on incorporating palliative care in primary care for the California Association of Nurse Practitioners. In addition to a recent outpatient internal medicine practice, I have previously been a clinical or organizational consultant at critical access and regional referral hospitals. A mid career guy, I take care of patients, teach, mentor students and write a bit. I've published a chapter on caring for geriatric depression at end of life in a text book for our national hospice and palliative nursing organization - HPNA- and am working on other publishing projects.Choices matter in a life well lived. My best work is supporting people in consciously making choices about their health care in support of furthering their life stories. I love this work and am proud to be a part of it.
