Machine Learning & Optimization Researcher

• Pioneered the design and implementation of a microservice for Iberdrola related to electricity consumption forecasting. This innovative service combines tools from moving averages to advanced deep learning models, facilitating precise predictions for over 2000 distribution lines with hourly granularity. • Developed a sophisticated software solution based on two-stage stochastic programming for a German aggregator of small prosumers within the German electricity market. This software manages a variety of resources, including batteries, electric vehicles (EVs), thermostats, and PV systems, to strategically operate in day-ahead and real-time electricity markets for energy and ancillary services. This development significantly boosts operational efficiency and profitability. • Provided expert consultancy for ENEL in the ERCOT electricity market, focusing on advanced battery optimization algorithms. These algorithms employ a strategic approach to bidding (energy, regulation up and down) in day-ahead and real-time markets, optimizing the financial performance of energy storage systems.

Transmission Planning ResearcherI worked on the European project HVDC-WISE (https://hvdc-wise.eu/).My main role in this project was coordinating Task 5.1 of Work Package 5, and working directly in the production of deliverables.

• Lead developer and ideator of the TransFlex Project, funded by the EU under the prestigious H2020 MSCA-COFUND Programme. • As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow, played a pivotal role in pioneering the development of optimization software using cutting-edge Evolutionary Computation and Machine Learning techniques. The outcomes of this work have been published and can be freely accessed at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2210650223001955• The software aimed at improving the decision-making process for investments in the electric power transmission sector, significantly enhancing efficiency and strategic planning capabilities.

• Led courses on Electric Power Transmission and Electric Power Generation for undergraduate students in Electrical Engineering, providing comprehensive education on key aspects of power systems.• Developed and introduced a new PhD-level course titled "Renewable Energy in the Electrical System", focusing on the integration of renewable energy sources into the electrical grid. The course covers advanced topics such as: • Optimization and data analytics for solving complex problems in the energy sector. • Strategies for battery arbitrage and the management of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). • Impact of electrical vehicle charging on the power grid. • Bidding strategies for aggregators of prosumers, enhancing the economic and operational efficiency of renewable energy utilization.

• Conducted Survival Analysis on power transformers to predict their lifespan and enhance maintenance strategies. • Contributed to the development of a new tariff structure for a distribution company in Portugal, a pivotal project commissioned by the national regulatory body, aimed at modernizing and optimizing energy costs for consumers. • Selected as a member of an elite team providing technical insights for Portugal's Ten-Year Plan for the transmission grid, influencing national infrastructure development and energy policy. • Engaged in several other small consultancies, offering expert advice and actionable solutions across a range of technical and strategic challenges in the energy sector.
