The UK Defence Exploitation Facility, set up to analyse material recovered from IEDs, provides an exploitation capability in support of deployed operations overseas. Results of exploitation may be used as part of a layered ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, & Reconnaissance) approach to inform the Commander's decision making-process, and may contribute to the rule of law and force protection. The UK DEF offers a variety of exploitation functions, including chemical analysis, and biometric identity intelligence via a number of modalities including fingerprint and DNA analysis, fused together and delivered as an intelligence product to inform military and OGD customers in support of Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism activity.
