My core role involved managing clients throughout Central Otago, New Zealand, in gaining resource consent for subdivision and development projects. The Central Otago area is characterized by rural alpine landscapes which are identified as sensitive to the visual effects of subdivision and development, and is recognized by district and national policy. This presented consenting challenges related to landscape sensitivity, rural productivity, stringent environmental management of earthworks and land stability, and up-zoning of traditionally low-density rural townships.

My core role involved preparing resource consent applications for private and public sector clients at district and regional level. I also acted on behalf of local governments to process resource consent applications in the Auckland and Queenstown areas. I regularly provided planning advice to inform indicative developments for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and other private clients.

My role involved preparing Transportation Impact Assessments or Integrated Transport Assessments for private clients from all over New Zealand. I also provided peer reviews of the transportation effects of resource consent applications and private plan changes on behalf of Auckland Council. This position enabled me to gain practical skills in the field of construction and land surveying. My role demanded the understanding of all aspects of the survey process. This allowed me to competently assist the surveyor and often contribute to tasks such as grid, pile and boundary set outs, as-built’s and topography surveys. I learnt the importance of communication between co-workers, to achieve accurate results, and give us confidence in the work we had done.

Auckland

I was employed by Auckland Council during two different campaigns that involved canvassing suburbs of Auckland identified as needing educating. In 2014 as part of the 'recycle right' campaign, my role was to help residents better understand the correct way and benefits of recycling. Similarly, in 2015 I aided Whangaparaoa residents in transitioning to a new inorganic collection system. This role gave me familiarity in engaging with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
