MATRA: five letters of a bizarre acronym synonymous with high technology, challenge, agility, team spirit and "commando" and a name inextricably linked to that of Jean Luc Lagardère, its emblematic boss for forty years (from 1963 until his death in 2003). Forty years during which Engins Matra, which became Aerospatiale Matra, went from being a little-known company to a very media-friendly group that managed to annex its gigantic rival Aérospatiale and to conduct activities as diverse as Defense industry, space, metro, automobile, communications, publishing, radio, the press .....Great successes in missiles, satellites, the brain of Ariane, VAL, metros, F1, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the automobile industry including Espace (on 4 wheels!) and some great failures in football, telephones, watchmaking and especially television ....
