The People’s Budget Office is a project of Mural Arts Philadelphia led by artist Phoebe Bachman that empowers residents to engage directly in the municipal budgeting process. Launched in 2021, the project is designed to educate Philadelphians on how the city budget works, provide tools and opportunities for them to advocate for their funding concerns, and imagines what a fully funded city could look like through artistic interventions. By involving residents in decision-making, the People’s Budget aims to create a more equitable allocation of municipal resources that reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of Philadelphia’s communities.

We Will Write the World is an early education literacy project created in collaboration with several community organizations, Mighty Engine, and funded by the William Penn Foundation. All of these efforts contribute to the citywide Read by 4th effort to stimulate literacy in Philadelphia. The nation’s most comprehensive early literacy campaign, Read by 4th is guided by the understanding that children who read well by 4th grade have a better chance at school and life success.

The End the Exception project elevated awareness of the Abolition Amendment on addressing mass incarceration. The core of the project consisted of working with artists who are currently or formerly incarcerated to create artworks about the labor they’ve performed during incarceration. Phoebe Bachman worked with Akeil Robertson to facilitate a series of teach-ins in four cities across the U.S. The first iteration of the project concluded with an public art exhibition in front of the Constitution Center in Philadelphia.The second part of the project is a series of murals in five different cities across the US: Philadelphia, Houston, Atlanta, Jersey City, and Oakland.

Over the past three years I’ve served as the Project Coordinator and member of the Artistic Team for Philadelphia Assembled, a project initiated in 2013 by Jeanne Van Heeswijk with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Philadelphia Assembled is an expansive project with over 150 collaborators that amplifies narratives of resilience, resistance, and community building within the city. My work within Philadelphia Assembled allowed me to practice a wide range of methodologies and skills daily, most importantly developing the ability to uphold diverse collaborations.
