Profile bio

About Phoebe Chan

I strongly believe that each child is a unique individual to be nurtured and flourished. As an educator, I value each child as an individual and provide many opportunities for them to explore and construct knowledge. I am Phoebe Chan, a Year 3 student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic pursuing a diploma in Early Childhood Development and Education. As a cheerful and curious individual, I am passionate and enthusiastic about working with children. I am keen in exploring different ways for children to learn despite their circumstances and ensure that they are maximised to their fullest potential to achieve great things in life. I strive to be a lifelong learner with a passion for learning and try out things that are out of my comfort zone to equip myself with more skills and knowledge to improve myself as a whole. Through my 3 years of studying in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I had 2 practicums and 1 internship. Through these experiences, I was able to apply skills and knowledge I learnt in various modules. Alongside all the other modules that were essential in this course, I was able to craft and implement engaging lessons for children to meet the different lesson objectives. These skills and knowledge learnt equipped me with the basic theories to work with children of different abilities and needs efficiently, promoting holistic development. During my 6 months internship, I was also lucky enough to work with children of different age groups, which taught me the difference in managing different age groups. For Kindergarten 1s, they were not as stable and independent as they just came into the centre from Nursery. Thus, I had to find the right balance between assisting them and at the same time promoting independence. As for Kindergarten 2s, they were much more independent and outspoken. I had to ensure that the style and tone, as well as the choice of vocabulary was appropriate to communicate with them. Nevertheless, I am very grateful to have forged a positive and trustworthy relationship with the children during this experience. I also had the chance to plan 1 field trip with minimal guidance, assist in 4 other trips and attend 2 events. My part time job at The Body Shop instilled the value of patience in me, which is an important value as it affects the way I interact with children. Thus, I am very grateful for this experience as it has helped me develop into a better individual. With the passion to positively develop and nurture children, my plans upon graduation include pursuing a degree to further equip myself with skills to understand and help children.

Intern Early Childhood Educator

Moe Kindergarten

Singapore

From the end of February 2023 to the start of September 2023, I was on a 6 months internship with MOE Kindergarten @ Horizon. I was attached to the Kindergarten 1 (K1) class during the morning session as my host class and had the chance to take a Kindergarten 2 (K2) class in the afternoon session. I took on roles and responsibilities such as: - assisted my mentor in the Kindergarten 1 class of 20 children - designed and implemented 10 self-crafted lesson plans for a class of 20 K1 children- planned 1 field trip to Bird Paradise for the K1 cohort (with assistance from my mentor)- created 1 take-home activity for my host class - created 4 learning centre materials for my host class - helped to set up ‘Pretend Play’ corner in my host class - assisted in managing different routines (e.g. temperature taking, health checks, snack time, etc.) - assisted in arrival and dismissal of children - assisted my mentor in the Kindergarten 2 class of 19 children - implemented 10 adapted lesson plans for a class of 19 K2 children - went for 5 field trips with different classes (SCDF fire station, NEWater Visitor Centre, Little India, Singapore Zoo, Bird Paradise) - helped in setting up decorations for Racial Harmony Day - involved in 2 events held by the school (K1 Life @ MK , Horizon Family Day)It was an eye opening experience for me as I learned many new things that would help me in the future in this industry. It was also a good opportunity for me to apply what I learnt in school to real life and reflect on how I could do better to improve myself as an educator. Through this experience, I forged positive relationships with children and my colleagues and had a few chances to communicate with parents. I also got to see how things were done on the ground and gained more industry insights! Most importantly, I was able to learn about my own teaching style and how I could incorporate my vision and values into my teaching.

Intern Early Childhood Educator

Singapore

From the end of October 2022 to the start of December 2022, I was attached to MY World preschool for a five-week attachment. I was attached to the Nursery 2 (N2) class as my host class. Through the attachment, I took on roles and responsibilities as mentioned below:- assisted my host teacher in the N2 class of 19 children - assisted my host teacher in managing a class of 19 N2 children during routines (e.g. toileting, nap time, - filling up children’s water bottles, mealtime, temperature taking, etc.) - designed and implemented 3 lessons (with minimal assistance from the host teacher) to 5 children in my host class - created 2 learning centre materials for my host class- assisted in setting up the ‘Dramatic Play’ corner- read storybooks multiple times to 19 children independently before their nap time - went for 1 field trip with my host class (Air Force Museum)Through this attachment, I got to apply what I learnt to real life. Most importantly, to experience how it is like to conduct lessons. It is not just about delivering the content, but also about how to manage the class, sustain the children's attention and deal with sudden situations flexibly. I also learnt the importance of having meaningful interactions between adults and children. These interactions not only help children improve their verbal skills, but also encourages them to speak up and share their thoughts freely. Through these interactions, the relationship forged between the educator and the children will be positive and close, which makes the children feel safe and comfortable with them.

Intern Early Childhood Educator

Pcf Sparkletots

Singapore

From the mid of August 2021 to the start of September 2021,I was attached to PCF Sparkletots for a ten-day attachment. I was attached to the Nursery 2 (N2) class as my host class. Through the attachment, I took on roles and responsibilities as mentioned below: - performed daily routines (e.g. bringing children to the toilet, assisting children during meal time, temperature taking, filling up their water bottles, etc.)- assisted my host teacher in managing a class of 18 N2 children- assisted the Chinese Language teacher in conducting a motor skills lesson to a class of 15 N2 children- read storybooks multiple times to 15 children with minimal assistance from my host teacherThrough this attachment, I got to see how the setting was like in a real childcare centre. As this was my first attachment, it felt surreal to see how the knowledge I learnt in school was applicable to what I saw in the centre. The skills that I was taught in the different modules helped me interact with the children well and gave me sufficient knowledge to know how to assist my host teacher. All in all, it was an insightful experience for me to see how being an early childhood educator is like.

Retail Assistant

Singapore

After my ‘O’ Levels in 2020, I took up my first part-time job at The Body Shop as a retail assistant. This experience helped me improve on my social skills as I had to interact with customers, who are strangers most of the time. As an introvert, I initially struggled with communicating with the customers and managing the cashier tasks. However, with the guidance of my manager, I was able to assist the customer’s queries and interact with them naturally to ensure a positive customer experience. Through this experience, I got to work on my time management, accuracy skills as well as working under stress. Working in a retail outlet required me to work in a fast paced manner, and I had to be accurate when giving customers recommendations on the products to use, when replenishing items as well as billing. This work experience also instilled the value of patience in me as I found myself to become more tolerant. To me, I think that patience is an important value for early childhood educators as it affects the way we handle and communicate with the children. Thus, I am very grateful for the work experience at The Body Shop as it helped me develop into a better individual.

Through this experience, I recognised the importance of building healthy relationships with other members of the team, in good times and bad. I also understood the importance of teamwork and communication through this team sport. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to handle the responsibility of being the captain, which has helped me grow as an individual to inspire, motivate and raise team morale. Personally, I think the takeaways from this experience is vital for me as an early childhood educator. Having the experience of playing a team sport helps me understand the importance of communication, positive interactions, as well as teamwork. This would eventually help me build positive relationships with colleagues, children and parents in the future, and have effective communication when working alongside people from different backgrounds.
