Hackney Account is part of an independent advisory group of young people that monitors, researches, and represents community interests on policing issues in Hackney. Looking at important issues such as trust in police, deaths in custody, the education system, and youth violence, my role contributes a historical analysis by historicizing social issues necessitating parts of British and global history. On top of the media and research work, the group meets regularly with the local Basic Command Unit and other statutory bodies such as MOPAC and Hackney Council to hold officers to account on issues including the use of force, Section ’60s, and racial disproportionality.My official role within Account is chairing meetings and secretarial duties such as setting agendas and minute taking and project management requiring a high level of organization, task management, and discipline. My historical insight and awareness inform the team on the intersections between the local racialized experience of marginalization with a history of imperial entanglement and globalization.

My position with BLAM was as a researcher and as a facilitator of Black history sessions to children in primary schools in two partnering schools in South London.The research project primarily involved report writing such as baseline reports, literature reviews, and chapters for the final report reviewing school policies, the ‘Hidden Curriculum', and the effects on Black student experience and educational achievement. Moreover, this role involved incorporated quantitative and qualitative data collection such as creating and reviewing parent, teacher, and student surveys and facilitating workshops. My role in school project delivery involved delivering history sessions, classroom management, lesson planning, and resource creation in an age-appropriate and creative manner. Additionally, this position required creating social media and blog posts. My leadership and organizational skills allowed me to facilitate collaboration between the two interconnected projects.

A 10-week history placement with Hackney Archives allowed me to create and facilitate the collaborative event 'Stop and Research' where we invited community members and activists to discuss the history of policing and police brutality in the early 1980s Hackney. The collaborative documentary 'Community Healing' was centered as the event engaged with archival material to address social issues facing Black communities today.
