The HIV prevalence for Myanmar is estimated at 230,000 people aged 15 through 49. This corresponds to a national adult prevalence of 0.67% . There are thirteen thousand new HIV infections a year, Various International Non-Governmental Organizations, as well as the government of Myanmar with the National Aids Programmed (NAP), provide health services to a very limited number of PLWH. Moreover, PLWHs suffer from a disease, which excludes them from the society in Myanmar. HIV is a source of stigmatization, which leads PLWH to extreme poverty, and daily jeopardizes livelihoods. The diseases almost wipe out the whole population PWLH community facing socio-economic and their family problems. Few associations are trying to improve livelihoods of People Living with HIV/AIDS. The experience shows great results in terms of support provided, as well as civil society empowerment.Phoenix is one of the biggest associations. It was created in October 2005, by People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH), to provide mutual and self-support to PLWH facing socio-economic problems, in the most vulnerable townships of Yangon. The large majority of these populations are extremely poor, relying on daily wages (as laborers, factory workers, food vendors and other informal jobs). There is a high incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV/AIDS. Most of Phoenix founders have been receiving comprehensive HIV heath care in Medicines’ Sans Frontiers’ (MSF-H/AZG) Thazin Clinics in Yangon. With the introduction of Anti-retroviral drugs in 2003, MSF patients regain strength and hope. Regularly gathered for PLWH support group sessions , a few patients initiated the Phoenix association in order to address PLWH member’s serious socio-economical problems . Until recently, Phoenix was undertaking its activities on the basis of the voluntary services of its members (A core group of 15 full-time members, with another 85 dedicating part of their time to specific projects).
