Trauma, illness and grief can significantly impact professionals working on the front lines. Issues first responders may experience include Post Traumatic Stress symptoms, the need for specialized trauma communication skills and support with emotions arising from death notifications. Police, fire, paramedic, dispatch, hospital and social services personnel are supported professionally and in their personal lives by the Bay Area Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team. The Bay Area CISM Team provides crisis intervention to our community as well. When there has been a death or critical incident in our schools, neighborhoods, businesses or community agencies, we are forever changed. The impact can be far reaching, for both individuals and agencies. The Bay Area CISM Team will respond with immediate support and intervention, provided in both a group and individual setting. Many times, when a crisis occurs, we need to come together as a group who has survived and be with each other in a safe and non-judgmental place to understand that our different stress responses are normal and to give and receive support. Tools for coping are also offered, which can assist the community in building the "New Normal".

The PFLAG Speakers Bureau (PSB) is a volunteer group who speak on panels of about 3-5 people to classes (middle- and high-school, university), civic/community/private organizations and institutions, non-profits, churches etc. about our experiences as LGBT individuals or as the parents of LGBT children. We speak throughout the Bay Area, but mostly in the San Jose area and the peninsula. Panels begin with a brief description and history of PFLAG, then each panelist tells their story (3-5 min each) with the remaining time for Q and A. The PSB mission is to educate, end discrimination & break down stereotypes about the LGBT community. The group belongs to the San Jose/Peninsula PFLAG chapter and represents part of PFLAG's mission focused on education and advocacy. As Coordinator, I set-up and organize speaker panels as requests come in. I also find new speakers and new speaking opportunities. I schedule and conduct new speaker training. I maintin the database for the group too.
Providing those in immediate danger with ability, authority, and information, so that they may make a good decision in the moment is only common sense. And it has always been the basis of the A.L.I.C.E. program. But knowing the Where?, When?, and What? of a proper response does not answer How? This requires some specific, but easy and effective, strategies. As an instructor, I teach the strategies to persons of all ages. The strategies can be employed at corporations, shopping malls, churches, schools, hospitals, and various other places. We work with the administration to modify, create, or enhance the existing plan. Classes can be modified to meet the needs of the institution. For additional information about Response Options & the A.L.i.C.E. program go to www.ROseminars.com.
