Forest therapy or forest bathing is a global wellness program that originated in Japan, known there as “shinrin yoku.” The gentle, mindful walks through nature have been scientifically proven to result in numerous health benefits, including stress reduction, boosted immune function, lowered blood pressure, improved mood, focus, and creativity. I am the first forest therapy guide in Hawai‘I trained and certified by the Association of Nature & Forest Therapy Guides & Programs (ANFT), the leading global voice for forest therapy. Guides trained by ANFT conduct walks which incorporate a series of “invitations” to help participants connect with nature through their senses, and are themselves guided by the principle that “the forest is the therapist, the guide opens the doors.”
