I am a founder, investor, coach, and author who has worked in the Internet world since the early 1990s. I have founded a number of companies and pro-bono programs. Today, I run a private community of senior leaders in Product and General Management. And, I operate my own small private value investing fund, influenced by the philosophy of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger.I also coach CEOs and senior executives. And I have written two books, and am working on my third. I was recently on Lenny's Podcast, and have been a guest on a number of others. Marty Cagan also profiled me in his latest book, Transformed. For my most recent book, Never Search Alone, I'm donating 100% of the sales to building a global volunteer community that has helped more than 30,000 job seekers in this tech downturn (you can find the suite of free services at Phyl.org).---More details---I'm the founder and CEO of Collaborative Gain, a community of senior-level Product (and GM) leaders who are passionate about helping one another build great products, companies, and careers. CG provides three levels of coaching: Peer Coaching (Councils for leaders at all levels); Concierge Coaching (1:1 Coaching for VP/SVP); Executive Coaching (1:1 Coaching for Chief Product Officers and CEOs). I'm also the author of "Never Search Alone: The Job Seeker's Playbook", which helps everyone from CEOs, Chief Product Officers, VPs, ICs and college students conduct a collaborative search, discover their Candidate-Market Fit, and find jobs at the intersection between their hopes and dreams and market realities.I've built a volunteer-led pro-bono community around the book that has launched close to 3,000 Job Search Councils.I started my career in the early Internet – on the startup team of the first company Amazon bought and was the longtime CEO of Creative Good, the pioneering customer experience firm that worked with Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and many others. I sit on for-profit and nonprofit boards, and have launched several global pro-bono programs including Slow Art Day, Reading Odyssey, and the World of Business Reading Group, which introduces high school and college students to business, finance, leadership and ethics. A graduate of the Harvard Business School, my previous writing includes the book "Customers Included" (co-authored), contributing author of "The Warren Buffett Shareholder", and the Harvard Business Review article, “Who Can Help the CEO?” I live in Brooklyn, identify as non-binary, and welcome any & all pronouns.

Co-AuthorCustomers Included Jan 2011 - PresentCustomers Included profiles the lessons I learned running more than 400 projects for companies like Apple, Facebook and Microsoft in my 15-year tenure as CEO of Creative Good.Starting in the 1990s, I became one of the pioneers of customer experience and product management. My team and I helped Facebook figure out if non-college students might like the service (now, of course, Facebook is working on figuring out if college students might be interested again). We worked with Apple in the early days of the iPhone. We helped Travelocity create the paradigm for online travel back in the 1990s. We learned a lot -- including the answer to this question: if so many understand the customer is important, why do companies continue to create mediocre products? Why do companies so often fail to give customers what they want? I co-authored the definitive book to answer that question and to help companies build a better customer experience.”Phil Terry shared his message of "Customers Included" with our senior leadership team and gave us tangible ideas on how we could better connect our work to our audience. It was a terrific presentation which has helped inform our strategic planning.” - Paula Kerger, President and CEO, PBS"If you are looking for a speaker to motivate your team to focus on customers, I highly recommend Phil - we loved his talk."- Sara Ortloff Khoury, Vice President User Experience & Research, @walmartlabs“Phil is engaging, deeply thought provoking, and practical. I can’t recall the last speaker we’ve had at our company who created such an interactive environment and who kept the energy in the crowd up for a full 90 minutes.”- Ed Cooper, SVP Charles SchwabI have given over 250 keynote speeches and featured presentations over the years - and more than 80 "Customers Included" talks since the book came out in 2013 including to the following companies and conferences.

FounderWbrg Mar 2020 - PresentWBRG is a high school business literacy program run by a volunteer faculty and based on the philosophy and writings of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. A pro bono literacy project of Collaborative Gain, WBRG is dedicated to educating high school students on business, finance, leadership, and ethics. We address the most important issue—student motivation to learn. And we do that by enlisting the single best business and finance teacher the world has ever seen: Warren Buffett. While he doesn’t personally come to class, his terrific writings and speeches are the foundation of this program. Phyl started WBRG in the spring of 2020, when the pandemic forced most schools to close and education was in crisis in the United States. Since that time, Phyl and their co-founders have taken a selection of 40 years of Buffett Shareholder Letters and speeches and distilled them into a six-week course that has now been tested and refined with more than 500 students over 4 years.More information at WBRG.org. -

CeoCreative Good - Customer Experience Consulting Feb 1999 - Feb 2014UsI ran and built Creative Good over a 15 year period.During that time I developed the consulting methodology, hired and oversaw the consulting team and supervised more than 400 projects with leading retailers, financial services and media companies ranging from American Express to Facebook, from the early social media pioneer del.icious (later sold to Yahoo!) to the BBC, New York Times, Nike and Apple. During my tenure as CEO of Creative Good, I delivered over 150 talks - putting customer experience on the map as a strategic imperative - and co-authored, Customers Included. I am grateful to the consulting clients and team I worked with at Creative Good over the last 15 years - and am proud of the role I played in putting customer experience on the map. I'm also proud of my book, "Customers Included", which I co-authored with my longtime business partner. The book is my definitive statement of what I learned about customer experience in close to two decades of work at Creative Good and elsewhere. What's next for me? In 2002, I launched the Councils, a peer leadership and learning network for senior executives, and in 2014 I decided to sell the consulting business and take the Councils and form a new company, Collaborative Gain, which has its mission to bring peer learning environments out to thousands of more executives around the world. -
