Profile bio

About Pia Jane

I was raised in the Philippines, in Manila and San Pedro, and moved to New Zealand due to a complex situation. I enrolled at the Kelston Deaf Education Centre and was a student there from primary school through to college for about ten years. I am Deaf plus (with additional disabilities). I am grateful that my dual identities were acknowledged during my journey, as it provided me with extra resources to navigate numerous barriers.I am passionate about studying disability and mental health. After graduating from high school, I realised I was not fully prepared for everything because I lacked a clear career goal. Nonetheless, I got my first job and established workshops on "disability awareness." After learning about my Deaf plus identity and the significant barriers it presented from my childhood experiences, I attended Victoria University of Wellington for nearly three years to become a qualified New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) tutor. My role involved teaching students with disabilities who have difficulty accessing NZSL education. This path led me to psychology, where I continued to gain a deeper understanding of disability discourse and linguistics, developing resources to empower people with disabilities who need them the most. This is who I am right now.

Listed skills include Collaborative Problem Solving, Digital Art, Flyer Design, Critical Thinking Skills, and 28 others.
