I have always been fascinated by physiology, ever since I got that Christmas present from a friend which had simple pull-apart models of the basic human body. It made me question how it all fitted together, how they were linked, and how these bits and pieces were the core of human life. Skills: Empathy, Compassion, ResilienceDuring my time as a swim instructor, having been assigned multiple swimmers with special educational needs has broadened my empathy, compassion, resilience, and respect for others as well as my ability to articulate. I vividly remember an ADHD swimmer I had. It took longer for him to develop skills as he had difficulty comprehending speech. Along with his parents we developed other means of effective communication, of which included demonstrations, games and skill progressions tailored specifically for him. We developed a strong bond which with our resilience allowed him to progress from private lessons into being able to integrate into lessons with other swimmers. It was through my respect for his condition, my compassion and our resilience, in addition to communication between him, his parents and I that allowed him to see progress. Being a coach has consolidated my virtue of compassion and empathy for others. It had me experience what it really meant to view things from others' perspective, to speak at their level and to feel for others. These skills are crucial for a role as a future surgeon. Skill: Communication, Enthusiasm, CommitmentAs Academic House Captain, I was responsible for peer tutoring services. I promoted a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere, allowing tutees and tutors alike to reciprocate the respect and enjoy being part of the tutoring community. I had to articulate my ideas to staff as well as other House Executives, ranging from charity events to weekly ‘house’ assemblies. Commitment played a vital role in ensuring things were done according to plan. All these are transferrable key qualities of a physician, allowing them to build trust and a rapport with their patient.Skill: ArticulationMy past job nature as a swim instructor calls upon this personal quality. I articulate skills to be taught to my swimmers not just verbally but by body language, facial expressions and by proxemics. For instance, when I am teaching 10yr old's, I communicated by gestures and demonstrating as it would be easier than trying to speak through the existing noisy atmosphere. This personal quality has allowed me to extend my communication skills away from speech, to still ensure my message gets across to each swimmer.
