They lead to vibrations and structural damage. Predicting them at the design stage remains a scientific challenge because many fundamental aspects which control these modes are not yet understood. An interesting path to study thermoacoustic instabilities is to rely on numerical simulation, and especially Large Eddy Simulation (LES).
