About Pierre Carles

After a training as an Aerospace Engineer in Toulouse, I started working for the French Space Agency (CNES) as a Research Engineer while pursuing a PhD. My work focused on the modelling of complex fluids in space experiments onboard the MIR station, in the framework of Franco-Russian joint space missions that flew in the early 90s.Graduating for my PhD in 1994, I spent one year as a Wind-Tunnel Test Engineer in a large military aerospace facility in Toulouse (the Centre d'Essais Aéronautiques de Toulouse). In 1995, I was recruited as an Assistant Professor in Sorbonne Université in Paris (then Université Pierre et Marie Curie), where my career in research and education began.Through the years, I have been teaching in the fields of Fluid Mechanics, Acoustics, Thermodynamics, Chaos and other topics. I first taught in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Sorbonne Université, until 2008 when I joined Polytech Sorbonne, the on-campus engineering graduate school. My research has been focused on the Dynamics of Complex Systems, with an emphasis on Complex Fluids and Thermal Transport in complex situations. I have run lasting collaborations on Space Research with groups from NASA and JAXA, before becoming a consultant and a space experiment co-investigator for NASA myself.Starting from 2004, I also initiated an experimental and theoretical project with the Physics Department of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland (OH, USA), related to the use of Magnetic Levitation in Inertial Confinement Fusion.2004 was also the year when I obtained my HdR diploma (Habilitation à Diriger les Recherche), allowing me to advise PhD theses independently.Over the years, I took several administrative responsibilities in Sorbonne Université. In particular, I served as Head of the Engineering Mechanics Department in Polytech Sorbonne from 2008 to 2013. In parallel, I was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Physics Department of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland from 2012 to 2018.Starting from 2017, I have been focusing on pedagogical development and innovation, in the fields of active learning and problem-oriented learning. My most recent project is centred on the use of Open Source technologies as a mean to develop light and open experimental demonstrators, with which to teach experimental research through a low-cost, flexible hands-on approach. This work has led to the creation of a dedicated YouTube channel, La Physique avec les Mains, aimed both at the general public and at students with a more advanced training in the relevant topics.
