Mauricie Medical campus of the Universite de Montreal (UdeM):Hired in January 2003 to promote the Trois-Regional Hospital Center (CHRTR) as a potential ally to the 4 Quebec Medical Schools, the CHRTR and the UdeM met in June 2003 and decided to create a regional medical campus in the Mauricie. From the very start, I was awarded the responsabilty to make it happen in the region. 14 months later, we had created an alliance with 2 otherinstitutions (the local University in Trois-Rivieres, or UQTR, and a community hospital in Shawinigan, or CSSSE) and admitted our first cohort of medical students starting their premd year at the UQTR. From a region with the worst shortage of physicians in the Province of Quebec in 2003, we succeeded in getting an average increase of 30% of net increase in physicians workforce, increase our equivalent full-time students and residents from 5 in 2003, to 230 in 2011. We created two regional family medicine training units, a totally decentalized undergraduate medical education providing the whole MD curriculum locally to 32 students initially, includind the premed year, and numerous residency training opportunities in surgery, anesthesia, internal medicine,....Our medical school's score on the LMCC part II was second in 2010, out of 17 Canadian medical schools; if our regional campus had been a school on its own, we would have scored first in Canada. This was the ultimate benefit of combining the academic expertise of the UdeM medical school with the quality of clinical teaching and exposure in the Mauricie.
