Pierre K. M’Pelé MD, MPH, PhD is an African Public Health Personality, Epidemiologist, HIV/AIDS, Tropical Medicine and Public Health specialist. Former WHO Country Representative in Equatorial Guinea, Togo, Benin and Ethiopia. Member [FC] of the National Academy of Medicine of France elected in April 2021. Colonel Doctor® and Associate Professor of Public Health. Ambassador for Africa of Mercy Ships since 2016, an international NGO that uses ships to provide free surgeries in Africa. M’Pelé obtained his medical doctorate in 1982 and received several post-doctoral degrees including degrees in Epidemiology (MPH 1986), Tropical Medicine, Nutrition, Leprology and Public Health (PhD, 1994) from the University of Paris, France and leadership for health at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.M’Pelé has been, since the beginning of the HIV pandemic, a pioneer and advocate in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa and a human rights activist for the People Living with HIV. Former UNAIDS Regional Director for West and Central Africa from 2000 – 2004 and UNAIDS Country Coordinator for Nigeria from 2004 - 2007.M’Pelé has held several positions and made significant contributions to the field of Public Health at the regional and international levels. Founder and Honorary President of the Society for AIDS in Africa, and member of the International Presidential Advisory Panel on AIDS of the President of the Republic of South Africa Thabo M’Beki (2007).M’Pelé has received several scientific awards and recognitions from Ethiopia, France, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Congo and Benin. He got the 1988 Noury Lemarré Award from the French Society of Exotic Pathology for ‘Best young researcher of the year’. He is an author and co-author of several books, more than 140 scholarly articles, and scientific papers.He published his first autobiography in 2019 titled ‘An African Doctor’s path: From the beginning to the end of AIDS epidemic in Africa’In 2022, M’Pelé headed the Scientific Steering Committee of the Baseline Assessment on Surgical, Obstetric and Anesthesia Care Challenges in 601 district hospitals in 32 countries from the Sub-Saharan African Region. Under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Senegal and the President of the Africa Union. He has been the main facilitator of the Dakar Declaration on access to equitable, affordable, and quality Surgical, Obstetric and Anesthesia care by 2030 in Africa and its Regional Actions Plan 2022-2030 endorsed at the first leg by the Heads of States of Cameroon, Congo, Comoros, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal.
