Ballista Solutions is my personal vehicle for providing independent consultancy. I provide interim, consultancy and non-executive services ranging from commercialisation, investment, technical architecture, and strategy. With my career experience, there are few challenges that I have not faced and I have accumulated a wealth of practical know-how (and contacts) in areas ranging from corporate governance, IPR and commercial contracts to strategic partnerships, market entry and overall strategic planning.I aspire to be both flexible and adaptive in how I engage with customers, respectful of the context and immediate priorities. My contribution often centres on supporting early-stage technology companies and contributing to the transformation of operational management in infrastructure and industrial systems. I have extensive experience in both conventional and renewable energy, and utility sectors and have worked in the field of technology-led innovation for 25 years. Key drivers often include demands for greater mobility; electronic security; and the provision of intuitive systems, including digital twins. In a similar vein, I provide expertise to support organisations to realise a net zero target and decarbonise. I do so by working alongside experts to identify how best to successfully apply digitisation approaches pioneered to transform legacy infrastructure, assets and processes, and developing self-sustaining sensing and instrumentation systems. Underpinning this is the optimisation of cost-effective and pragmatic system design to increase operational efficiency.

As Founder and CEO of Dashboard, I was delighted to have been able to define a new global standard in compliance by directing development of the world's leading cyber-physical pipeline infrastructure solution. In practical terms, this involved overseeing research activity on proprietary IP and capability development, securing multi-million-pound investment, and establishing a global engineering partnership with a multi-billion-dollar multi-national. My role also involved overseeing the development of organisational strategy and branding, and establishing a world-class team of staff. I designed the technical architecture and engineering systems, and separately I supported customers to enhance security, safety and profitability, and achieve environmentally sustainable outcomes, by leveraging new technologies to apply the ethical use of knowledge and discovery from customer data. Finally, I directed the provision of bespoke continuous monitoring solutions relating to the acquisition and transmission of data; advanced and predictive analytics, leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence; and presentation of data. Accountability also lay with me to embed environmental and social and corporate governance as a core organisational value across all aspects of Dashboard’s activity.

In this capacity, I played a key role in supporting business’ transformation into a leading machine-to-machine and internet of things provider, by providing expertise in communications, hosted systems and electronic document management. My role also encompassed overseeing commercialisation of the company’s market-leading technologies by expanding applications and improving implementation outcomes.

Whilst CTO at Venncomm I was responsible for the technical architecture and was charged with the timely delivery of all technical projects. The core technical focus was the development of both the mobile application and multi-tenant telecoms platform.The development of both the mobile application and the core platform was led from the UK but delivered with the support of an established near-shore development partner based in Ukraine.

Working with the team at Dr Pete, I was specifically focussed on mobile technologies, business analysis and on developing several infrastructure project bids in Ivory Coast in conjunction with the assistance of the Foreign Office and involving face to face meetings with ministerial level Ivory Coast government officials seeking to support/accelerate economic development.

Whilst with MWC I was responsible for project managing the complete business start-up phase of this new business incubated by a successful wealth management company, and targeted to attract a minimum of 100,000 home users within 4 years in addition to the SME business product. I was personally responsible for the recruiting the technical team and for the design and build of one of the most secure document management systems in the world, designing all of the internal business processes and creating the internal administration processes. From a standing start in April 2011 a custom built document management system, CRM system and 2 x CMS based websites were created and launched (for both personal and business clients). I reported directly to the board of directors and was the principle systems architect, strategic technology leader and technical programme manager.

OneStopClick delivers white papers and technology-related research helping IT professionals and business executives achieve better business outcomes. I have continued to work with this company as a consultant to assist in the transition of the business into managed content origination/marketing and marketing automation programmes. I have contributed to the vendor selection process and both business and product development agendas.

Plymouth

Originally stemming from a 2 week project which expanded to become a rolling interim role, I joined this entertainment product company to completely re-brand, re-design and re-launch the core products spearheaded by the new video gaming based product. The goal was to reposition the business in the UK hospitality industry and establish credibility and visibility. With an office team of 8, and an extended UK sales force of a further 8, I worked to the MD and Ops Director completing the project in preparation for the sale of the entertainment division in 2011 to enable the business to focus on becoming the world's leading independent poker event, logistics and management consultancy.

Established in 2003, Airborne Networks is a fixed wireless infrastructure company whose primary markets are the telecom, ISP & municipal wireless sectors. I was responsible for creating channel/brand strategy, assisting with creating marketing and investment collateral and for evolving business and channel development strategies. Maintained ongoing dialogue and research with WiMax and WiFi standards organisations, potential partner organisations and existing commercial customers of other companies in the field. Responsible for representing the company at meetings both in the UK and abroad, researching/analysing addressable market sectors & developing sales leads to national and international operators.

This £12.5 million EU funded public private partnership was established in order to deliver broadband demand stimulation & also dramatically increase both the application of broadband based technologies amongst Devon based SMEs. As project director I was responsible for setting up the project and creating the business processing, audit proceedures and for shaping the overall project strategy within the confines of the EU funding. As project director I was also personally accountable for the disbursement of the £3.6 million SME grant funds and for implementing the European procurement regulations in order to ensure the utterly transparent use of public funds to achieve economic development. Whilst in post, I set about making this project a showcase for both the region and the UK as a whole, by implementing the project along private sector lines.

Totnes Devon

Following on from my acquisition of the web development company Exenet, Edge was an ambitious web development company promoting the concept of three tier web architecture and thin-client interface design. The business expanded to a total of 10 staff, working on a wide variety of private sector/EU funded projects and ran hand-in-hand with Enhance (the consultancy division). Edge was instrumental in building and managing the not-for-profit tech network KaratKrunch.

My recruitment as a surveyor by Bates Richards was completely unexpected, but it turned out that my ability to read/understand/comment complex legal documents (I studied contract law) my aptitude for absorbing complex technical specifications (aircon, power management, raised floors and UPS systems for dealing floors) combined with my hitherto untapped negotiation skills ideally equipped me to create/build a successful client base/fee income for the firm.
