Selected by Rio Tinto (Europe and Africa) to do a student summer placement conduction gold exploration in arctic Sweden. Training, formal and informal, included: sampling techniques, geological mapping, prospecting and mapping glacial movements. Working largely individually students were expected to: dig samples, maintain accurate records, prepare samples for shipping. Some work undertaken remotely by setting up heli-supported bases of operations.

As an Executive Officer in the Submarine Service sea-going duties, while dived, were primarily concerned with four areas of responsibility: weapons, sensors, navigation and Ship Control. In all these control room roles I worked as a part of a tight knit team leading part of the team or all of it depending on situation.
