Within the frame of his PhD, Pieter developed numerical methods for the solution of large dynamic soil-structure interaction problems (as arising in the field of noise and vibration). These numerical techniques are an order of magnitude faster than state-of-the art methods, hence enabling large scale computations with limited computational resources. His research required an interdisciplinary approach, combining aspects from engineering, computer science, and mathematics. He developed strong programming skills in C++ and MATLAB.Pieter was actively involved in the FP7 project RIVAS (2011-2013), which brought together 26 European stakeholders (academic and industrial) and focused on the mitigation of railway induced vibrations. He developed computational tools and performed numerical simulations that contributed to the design and implementation of vibration countermeasures.At KU Leuven, Pieter also contributed to teaching and consulting activities of the Structural Mechanics Section.
