Biochemistry LeaderI am a motivated drug hunter, keen on delivering dynamic therapies using the most efficient available modalities and methodologies. I have extensive experience building and leading multidisciplinary teams to tackle challenging drug discovery problems in the areas of inflammation and oncology. In my role at Celgene, a company best known for creative use of under-appreciated assets and data, I recognized the gap between informatics and bench science as the biggest challenge facing drug discovery. The ease with which current 'omics technologies can gather millions of data points was creating large datasets that were being wasted. To address this inefficiency I sought and was granted permission to build a cross-functional group that utilized both experiment and bioinformatic analysis. This “systems proteomics” group used rapid iteration cycles to turn large data sets into actionable knowledge. In this capacity we were able to identify numerous novel protein degrader targets. Additionally, this approach uncovered biological pathways and mechanisms of action that revealed new biomarkers. Together with the protein sciences group I managed, we delivered 6 therapeutics to clinic resulting in 4 patents over the course of 8 years. The process of building and leading these groups has given me a broad understanding of early research through translational development. Moving forward I hope to build on these pioneering ideas to continue addressing the fundamental gaps in biopharmaceutical research.
