Doctoral Researcher
PhD thesis: patient-specific, image-based biomechanical modeling Ranking of osteogenic potential of physical exercises in postmenopausal woman based on their femoral neck strain. What is the effect of certain excercises such as fast walking, running or specific resistance exercises on the bone density in the femoral neck. This study combines musculoskeletal models with finite element models to estimate strain rates in the femoral neck.Subject-specific aspects such as material properties, geometry of the patient reconstructed from medical images and loading calculated using musculoskeletal models were also taken into account. As part of the Materialise chair at the KU Leuven I am also involved in several other studies such as:Compress study:Patient-specific Finete element Analysis (FEA) to simulate bone growth around the Compress® Compliant Pre-Stress Implant UZ Leuven - Pellenberg, BelgiumSignature Study:Three-dimensional analysis of accuracy of component positioning in total knee arthroplasty with patient specific and conventional instruments: A randomized controlled trial - published at The Knee (2017)Materialise NV, Leuven, BelgiumDr. De Vloo, AZ Klina, Brasschaat, BelgiumCalcar-guided short stem:Do anatomical variations in the shape of the femur affect stress shielding after placement of a calcar-guided short-stem?University hospital Brussel, BelgiumMaterialise NV, Leuven, BelgiumMathysTrilock study: Is there a Biomechanical cause for postoperative thigh-pain for patients with a Tri-lock® prosthesis?
Product Design Engineer
As a Product Design Engineer, I am responsible for the development and testing of spinal implants including mechanical and functional testing as part of the pre-clinical evaluation for CE and FDA approval.Furthermore, I am responsible for the European 3DMed project working together with several international companies, universities, and hospitals. The goal of the project is to develop and integrate a workflow for 3d printed patient-specific medical devices including dedicated heat and surface treatments as well as the design of patient-specific maxillofacial and spinal implants. Besides 3DMed, I am also involved in several other grant applications such as WBSO, MIT, and Vroege Fase Financiering.
