About Paul Ingles

Software Developer specialising in data tools and infrastructure. I have helped build many of the data systems at TrafficBroker, Forward and now uSwitch- including many "Big Data" systems based on Hadoop.     In 2010 TrafficBroker rebranded as Forward Internet Group to deal with the growing set of businesses that TrafficBroker had spun off.Given the experience with breaking complex systems into smaller pieces, and building data systems that could handle the growing volumes of data we generated, I was one of 2 Forward developers to join uSwitch to lead an initiative of replacing the legacy .NET infrastructure to a set of heterogenous applications and services. A mix of Ruby and Clojure powers most of uSwitch.com, and is deployed onto EC2. This provides us with much more flexible compute capacity. This was recently tested during our busiest month ever. Dealing with this growing traffic reliably was extremely difficult with the old infrastructure. It also means the various teams around the business can safely deploy repeatedly throughout the day.Most recently I've been working on building data infrastructure and tools to help understand our users better. This has involved building a data backbone using Kafka, Protocol Buffers and some Cascalog and Cascading for processing data.I also presented some of our work in my talk at EuroClojure- Users as Data.Our more recent project work often means moving between the Clojure services and data tools, making changes in our Ruby web applications, and analysing data with R and ggplot2.

    I joined TrafficBroker and initially worked within Search team to build tools to help automate the collection, processing and analysis of our tracking data. We built systems around micro-services: small applications that had clear boundaries making it easy to write and throw-away, these provided a clean interface to interact with external dependencies, automatically scheduling/collecting data etc. During a technical spike into applying k-means clustering on an extremely large dataset we discovered Mahout and Hadoop. We built a Ruby gem (mandy) to help make MapReduce jobs easier to specify. We also built a batch scheduling system to make it easier to chain dependent jobs and monitor progress.These changes helped the existing implementations scale as the volume of our data grew- from gigabytes to 100's of gigabytes a day.
