Claudio Pinhanez is a scientist, a professor, and a manager of research and innovation groups. He is a Principal Research Scientist of IBM Research (Brazil) and the manager of the Conversational Intelligence group in the IBM Research Brazil laboratory. He leads a group focused on research in conversational systems, social computing, responsible AI, service science, and human-computer interfaces, with a special focus on disruptive technologies for language processing.Claudio is also the Deputy Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence (C4AI), a research partnership of University of São Paulo, IBM, and FAPESP, congregating about 100 researchers and providing more than 100 scholarships to students and post-docs. He is also a Visiting Professor of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo.Claudio got his Ph.D. in 1999 from the MIT Media Laboratory where he did multidisciplinary research on computer vision and interactive spaces. After the Ph.D. Claudio was hired as a researcher at the T.J. Watson laboratory of IBM Research in New York where he worked until 2008 when he was sent to Brazil to found a new research laboratory.
