I am an environmental social scientist working towards equitable governance of fisheries, food, and aquatic environments. My work is focused on low and middle income countries. I have conducted empirical research in coastal and rural Australia, Tonga, Timor-Leste, and Solomon Islands, and contribute to research and policy collaborations across Africa, Asia and the Pacific.With an incredible network of researchers and policy influencers, I work to illuminate the flows of aquatic goods and services – particularly fisheries for food and nutrition security - and examine governance at local to global scales. I bring to light less visible values, perspectives and innovations - working in ways to bring these into decision making processes and policy outcomes. In most of my work I am interdisciplinary, and I frequently facilitate transdisciplinary partnerships and processes.​I work closely with a network of established and emerging research leaders, communicators, advocates and policy makers - to build new insight and capacity to ensure equity and justice in ocean, agricultural and food system futures.

I lead research that looks across scales (from local to global) in the WorldFish and FISH CRP regions of focus - Asia, Africa and the Pacific - particularly examining policy environments and innovations that enable development outcomes through and within small-scale fisheries, and innovations along SSF value chains that optimise food and nutrition security benefits.

My research activities largely focus on understanding the roles of social networks, economic development and changing policy, culture, and demography, on small-scale fisheries governance. I employ an interdisciplinary approach to critically evaluate the contributions of community-based and cross-scale fisheries governance to ecological, gender equity, human wellbeing, and food and nutrition security outcomes. My research is commonly applied, conducted in partnership with local communities and governments, concurrent with development activities, and as a result embedded in the development context.
