The STAR (Students Tackling Advanced Research) Scholars program is a highly competitive opportunity for first-year students to engage in faculty-mentored research. As part of the STAR Scholars program, I conducted 350 hours of faculty-mentored research under the guidance of Dr. Dario Salvucci. Our research was focused on the development of a web-based teachable agent. In simple terms, web-based teachable agents are intelligent agents that aim to automate everyday tasks performed online. These agents can learn new tasks similar to how a human would learn through instructions, feedback, examples, and, most importantly, visual demonstrations of the same/similar task being performed by the human teacher. The current generation of web-based teachable agent struggles with identifying and classifying icons encountered online, which hinders their ability to accomplish the given tasks. We took a deep learning approach towards solving this problem, creating models that can identify common icons seen online. Here are some highlights from the research:- Utilized Tensorflow and Keras to create deep learning models that can classify common icons found online- Created a custom dataset for the project by utilizing custom Python scripts that enabled automated image data collection, significantly reducing the collection time- Achieved an 80% classification accuracy for 18 classes of icons by systemically testing various neural network architectures and tuning hyperparameters
